The plan will allow Ukrainian troops to be treated in an American military hospital for the first time since Russia invaded the country in February. It allows for treatment of up to 18 soldiers injured at the same time at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, the mass hospital in Germany, where the military has treated members of the American service who suffered injuries during the fighting for years.
Austin offered verbal instructions at the end of May to start offering treatment to injured Ukrainian soldiers, according to the memorandum. On 29 June, Austin formalised verbal guidelines in a memorandum titled “guidelines for medical treatment of injured Ukrainian service members”.
Although the plan received final approval nearly a month ago, Landstuhl has not yet received members of the Ukrainian service for medical care.
The official said the aim of the memorandum was to remove any bureaucracy that would slow the treatment delivery process if need arises. The plan would allow treatment if there were no available structure in Ukraine or at a closer location. Landstuhl is approximately 700 miles from the Ukrainian border.
