Lysychansk is on the right side of the river, which has served as a natural obstacle to Russian advancement so far.
Russia already controls most of Severodonnetsk, where severe street fighting is under way for days. Ukrainian officials have not ruled out withdrawal from the city into a more strategic position in Lysychansk.
If Russian forces captured two cities, they would have controlled the entire eastern region of Luhansk.
After a series of military losses in the first weeks of the war around the Ukrainian capital of Kiev and in the northeast, Russia had declared it would now focus on catching Luhansk and the nearby region of Donnetsk, known by all as Donbas. /Periscopi/
