More than two decades ago, over 1 million Albanians from Kosovo were forced to flee their homes because of the terrible war and crimes committed by Serbia. They mostly went to Albania and Northern Macedonia, but also to other countries.
This day, this year, is marked by the mind of Ukrainians who are forced to leave the country after unprotested Russian aggression.
U n NHCR says refugees should be treated with dignity and the search for security is a human right.
Wherever they come, people forced to leave must be welcomed. Refugees come from around the world. To escape danger, they can catch a plane, a boat, or walk. What remains universal is the right to seek security.
Every time people are forced to flee, they have the right to defend themselves. Whatever the threat, war, violence, persecution all deserve protection. Everyone has the right to be sure, said the message of U NHCR's case on this day's note.
In May 2022, the world reached a sharp milestone: the number of people forcibly displaced exceeded 100 million, or more than 1 percent of the world's population and equaled the 14th most populated place on the planet, according to the United Nations Refugees Agency.
