EP document says Serbia as a candidate for EU membership should show commitment to the EU rather than maintain strong ties with Russia, reports Danas.rs It's Periscope.
This document, which will come to the polls, cites that Serbia's progress to become part of the EU depends also on progress in normalising relations with Kosovo. In addition, progress in establishing rule of law, full harmonisation with EU foreign, security and defence policy, including sanctions against Russia.
Serbia, which has not imposed sanctions on Russia after the invasion of Ukraine, has been highly criticised by top leaders, even now Serb authorities are urgently being required to harmonise with EU positions and decisions in foreign and security policy, including implementation of restrictive measures against Russia and Belarus, and including sanctions against individuals, groups and entities.
It also stresses that between 2015 and 2021, Serbia's military empowerment has increased by 70%, largely thanks to purchases from Belarus, Russia and China.
The text of the amendment expresses concern for close co-operation with Russia in the military sphere and urges Serbia to review relations with Russia in defence policy and end military co-operation with that country, such as it is through the <x0 regional humanitarian centre” in Nis.
The document also expresses concern about the purchase of weapons from China. The document notes with concern that media capture mechanisms are being used and it is required that information on media ownership be made available to the public. /Periscopi/
