Official: Change the format of the Champions League, those are the rules

Given the transition from 23 to 36 teams, the biggest change will be made in transforming the group phase into a mini-liga, including participating teams.

Each club plays at least eight matches, against eight different opponents (four as locals, four guests).

There will also be some changes in the qualification phase format for preliminary matches, changes expected to take effect in the 2024/2025 edition. The first eight teams in the league automatically qualify for the knockout phase, until teams from ninth to 24 will compete at Play Off to two matches to secure 1/16.
These changes have come from the demands of clubs, which were not satisfied with the existing format.
