The U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced today that they have identified nine cases of monkey smallpox in seven American countries since Wednesday.
Cases have been identified in Massachusetts, Florida, Utah, Washington, California, Virginia, and New York.
The first case was confirmed on May 7 in Great Britain by a traveler who had stayed in Nigeria, and the first symptoms are skin rashes, with April 29th.
Lia, a light viral infection, is roving in African countries in Cameroon, the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Nigeria.
The worldwide species is thought to have a mortality rate of about one percent, although effective vaccines and treatments exist.
