Russia has largely dominated the heavens since it began its large-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24th, destroying Ukraine's civilian and military infrastructure with rockets and bombs, and using parachutists to take control of key parts of Ukrainian territory.

Russia is believed to be conducting up to 200 flights a day, compared with Ukraine, which in a day performs very few flights. Missiles and bombs released by aircraft are among the weapons that have destroyed cities and killed hundreds, perhaps thousands of civilians.

“Russia has turned Ukraine's sky into a source of death for thousands of people, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on March 16, as he begged the United States for more help for his country so Ukraine could be protected from air strikes.

The United States has made it clear that they are unwilling to support an area for Halt on Ukraine, saying this would put NATO forces in contact or possible conflict with Russia” and would bring war “to a completely new level”.

He said the Tupolev bombers, equipped with such floating missiles, Kh-101, are believed to have been stationed in Crime. Russia has bombed the regions of Lviv, Winnissia and Ivo-Frankivsk, using Kh-101 missiles.

Russia could also be using up to nine air bases in Belarus, Russia's closest military ally, have suggested satellite images. The Ukrainian Army said it saw shellings being made by the Sukhoi warplanes, which were launched by Belarus.

Belarusites are posting information about military activity on telegrams, including aircraft movements, Ukrainian officials said.

Russia has lost dozens of aircraft since it began its invasion and may be facing smaller numbers of experienced pilots, Ukrainian officials said. Ukraine has claimed to have caught at least two Russian pilots.

Ukraine is seeking from the West more antiaircraft weapons in order to contain Russian air operations.

The United States has supplied Kiev with rocket launchers used to attack aircraft and helicopters, while Poland and Slovakia are considering sending MiG-29 fighter aircraft. / REL
