The MMA vet will compete in his 77th professional war tonight when he faces Ilir Latifi at UFC Columbus. Oleynik is the first and only fighter to compete and win in four different decades after becoming a professional in 1996.
Olynik was born in Kharkiv, Ukraine, then part of the Soviet Union. The 44-year-old, who is a Russian naturalised citizen, was barred from entering his native country in 2015 after he wore a Vladimir Putin T-shirt before his second match at the UFC.
The Warrior of The UFC had reported links to the O plot war club, whose name is translated into “Stronghold” in English. The pro-rus group was formed in the eastern town of Olenyik and opposed Ukraine's EuroMaidan movement.
After living in Ukraine for three decades, Olynik was labeled a “threat to national security” from Ukraine after he described the ban from the country as “absurd”.
Putin declared war on Ukraine last month after years of tension between the two countries. Over 3.5 million refugees have fled the country through its western border as the situation continues to deteriorate.
