What are hypersonic weapons?

hypersonic weapons fly rapidly at least five times faster than sound speed and are easily maneuverable, with the ability even to change course during flight. They differ from ballistic missiles, which can also move at hypersonic speed, but have their default trajectory and limited maneuverability.

What are different types of hypersonic weapons?

There are two major categories of hypersonic weapons: hypersonic tools that are carried by another flying device; and self - directed hypersonic (crouse).

These first ones are removed to be released from the missile, which has transported them and <x0 ... collapse” into space towards target at speed 5 times higher than sound speed.

Croc hypersonic missiles use high-speed engines.

It doesn't matter what the threat is. If you can't see him, you can't defend yourself against him”, General John Hyten, former U.S. Army chief.

When he was commander of the U.S. Strategic Command in 2018, Mr. Hyten said that we have no defense that would neutralise the use of such a weapon against us... Our only defense is the capacities that discourage their putting to use”.

American officials have said that although there are several ground radars that can detect hypersonic weapons, they are not enough to give timely warning of the attack. Officials, including retired General Hyden, have called for the construction of a radar system in space.

What distinguishes hypersonic weapons from ballistic missiles?

Ballistic missiles can also fly at hypersonic speeds, but they have definite trajectorys and limited maneuverability.

What countries are producing hypersonic weapons?

The United States, Russia and China are producing hypersonic weapons. Other countries are also doing research on these types of weapons, while some countries have made irrefutable claims to have tested such weapons.

Following a mirror of countries currently producing hypersonic weapons.

United States

The U.S. Army demanded a $3.8 billion fund for the 2022 fiscal year for the production of hypersonic weapons, as well as $26.9m to do research on protection of such weapons. Most American hypersonic weapons are still in the production or testing phase. At least one such system is expected to reach the operational stage within this year. American hypersonic weapons carry conventional fillings.

Russia

Russia has been dealing with hypersonic weapons technology since the 1980s. Russian military officials said on 19 March they first sent hypersonic missiles to a target in Ukraine, which said it served as an underground weapons depot in the western part of the country. In 2018, President Vladimir Putin was proud of the Kinzhal hypersonic missile and the hypersonic Avangard. Moscow is also producing hypersonic Tsirkon missile, which can be launched by a ship's board. Russian media have also claimed that the Avangard system has become operational since December 2019.

China

US military officials and intelligence services say China is producing rockets and hypersonic vehicles, and that it may already have introduced at least one missile that has the capacity to transport hypersonic vehicles. American officials say Beijing has carried out “100ths” testing hypersonic weapons during the period 2016-2021, while Washington did only nine tests during the same period. General Mark Milley, U.S. Army Chief Staff, named it a very significant “” a significant hypersonic test done by China in August 2021.

We're experiencing one of the largest shifts in global geostrategic power... It only happens once in this time of time”, General Millie said.

North Korea

North Korea claims it has successfully tested the launch of two hypersonic missiles this year -- one on January 5th -- and the second on January 11th, according to reports by the state-run Korean news agency. US officials have not confirmed these claims so far, and have said they were only ballistic missile testing. Korean leader Kim Jong Un has said that hypersonic missiles would greatly increase his country's ability to discourage a nuclear attack, a position that many experts say put at risk South Korea.

Other Countries

Australia, India, France, Germany, and Japan are producing the technology needed for hypersonic weapons. Iran, Israel and North Korea have also reportedly fulfilled what is considered “basic research work” for hypersonic weapons. / VOA
