Great Britain today called on all G7 countries to stop using Russian oil and gas, as London and Washington have done, in response to the invasion of Ukraine by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“Putin must fail,” said British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss during a visit to the United States.
“In our response, we must double sanctions,” she said at a press conference with counterpart Antony Blinken.
That includes, she said, the complete exclusion of Russian banks from the international system Swift.
The EU has already ruled out seven Russian banks from the platform, but has decided to save for the time being two major financial institutions closely related to the hydrocarbon sector, due to some European countries' heavy dependence on Russian gas.
For the same reason, the EU does not want to ban Russian energy import, which was announced by the US and Great Britain on Tuesday.
“We want to encourage a larger group of countries to join us in these sanctions,” added Truss.
