Mark Zuckerberg has threatened to withdraw key services from the region following a dispute over the laws on data protection with Europe.
Meta has issued a silent warning saying it could close services if Europe does not allow it to carry out transatlantic data transfers.
That means transferring private data to people from safe servers to Europe, where they are highly regulated, to the US, reports DailyStar, broadcasts Klankosova.tv.
In an annual report to an American government agency, Meta said the company would probably have to stop offering more important products and services unless a new framework is approved.
While Meta claims that sharing data between countries and regions is critical for providing its services, the European Court of Justice has prevented it from doing so since July 2020. This is primarily to protect users across Europe from sharing or selling their data without their knowledge.
Facebook business model relies almost entirely on advertising, which brings personal data to users to trade and sell products to them.
The technology giant has come under fire over the years for the way its algorithms target user content according to this model and has faced charges of allowing disinformation.
