Berlin: In 2021 diplomats committed about 10,000 traffic violations

Diplomats and their families enjoy immunity. The agreement regulating this issue exists since Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations in 1961.
Last year German police have registered 9,973 traffic violations by foreign diplomats only on the streets of Berlin. None of these violations were prosecuted, nor was the immunity of international embassy personnel considered. The amount of fines pronounced is 200,000 euros, but none were paid.
The most frequent violations were wrong parking lots and extreme speed. The first ten countries include Saudi Arabia, Greece, the US, Iraq, Russia, Sudan, Egypt, Yemen, Indonesia and Turkmenistan. The diplomatic license plates have registered 2550 diplomatic choir vehicles.
According to German MPBʹ, from January to November 2021 diplomatic cars have participated in 46 traffic accidents. In 28 cases, which is 60 per cent of these accidents, there has been suspicion of escape, although even in such cases German authorities have no legal authority to impose sanctions.
