A prominent Turkish journalist, who was charged with slandering a radical group linked to Al-Qaeda, who backed Osama bin Laden and called for armed jihad and cutting the head of Americans, has been sentenced to nearly 300 years in prison. Hidayet Karaca led the large television network Samanyolu, which broadcast critical coverage to Islamic President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's government prior to the illegal detention in December 2014, a move described by the Journalists' Defence Committee as politically motivated. On June 4th 2022, the journalist was sentenced to 297 years and nine months at the end of a trial initiated by the government.
Under the decision, on November 22nd 2022 and released by Istanbul's 3rd Criminal Ending Court, the journalist must suffer a total of 318 years and five months in prison when his sentence is added by another case in 2015.
Karaca was held in prison for a year and a half before the public prosecutor pressed charges against him in an indictment filed on July 22, 2016. His judgment ended this year with a sentence.
The issue was launched after Erdogan's government claimed that Turkish jihadist group Tahşiyeciler, led by Mollahkım (also known as Mullahl-Keri; the real name Mehmet Doğan), was tarnished in a television show broadcast by Samantha TV and that Karaca was responsible for it.
Molah Muhammad and his associates faced a blow in 2010 and were indicted on charges against terrorism after police concluded that the group, monitored since 2000 by law enforcement and intelligence agencies, was getting ready to conduct terrorist attacks. During the raids, police discovered three hand grenades, a smoking bomb, seven pistols, 18 hunting rifles, electronic pieces for explosives, knives and a large quantity of ammunition in the suspect's homes. /abcnews. al
