Medium Swissinfo. ch has reported this Sunday for a secret meeting between the Kosovo and the Serbian sides in Switzerland in mid-November.
Presequently, another Swiss NZZ newspaper reported on the meeting.
Research “NZZ am Sontag” shows that in the background, Switzerland is discretely mediating between Serbia and Kosovo and is trying to prevent the conflict from escalating further.
The Federal Department of Foreign Affairs has hosted representatives of both countries in Switzerland in mid-November.
“Such a meeting took place a week after Serbs were withdrawn from Kosovo institutions”, EDA spokeswoman Eliza Raggi confirms. For confidential reasons, The EDA refuses to say exactly where the talks were held.
According to the SDA, this meeting away from the public is important so that representatives of Kosovo and Serbia regularly exchange thoughts on political issues and build confidence.
This enables direct discrete contacts, such as, word comes, to prevent the outbreak of violence”, the SDA writes away.
Furthermore, ideas can thus be tested, which will then be passed on to official negotiations.
Switzerland, as it is known, has been part of NATO's international peacekeeping mission in Kosovo (KFOR) since 1999. There are now 195 Swiss soldiers in Kosovo.
On December 6th, during the visit to Kosovo, the European Union's special envoy for the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue, Miroslav Lajcak, at a media conference had said that the meeting between Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti and Serbia's president, Aleksandar Vucic, “could be held within weeks”.
“We don't have time to waste, the same should not be described as pressure, but we should use this positive moment”, Lajcak had declared.
