3 steps for EU membership are: candidate status, membership negotiations and ratification of the treaty.
Candidate status It means formal acceptance of a country's application. This status is granted by the European Council's unanimous decision. From the time of application to candidate country status may be spent several years.
Membership Negotiations It's step two. They start only after the candidate country meets the political criteria, and this could take several years. These negotiations focus on adapting the laws of the EU-wage candidate country. These include 35 chapters and are the longest phase in the EU membership process.
Treaty of ratification: After 35 chapters are unanimously closed, the EU and candidate country sign the accession treaty. It must then be ratified by the candidate country and each EU country. And finally the official date of membership is set when the country becomes an equal member of the EU.
