European Union spokesman Peter Stano has said the EU condemns the violent attacks that took place in northern Kosovo.
He has called on the parties to refrain from violence and provocative acts and devote themselves to the immediate return of the safe atmosphere.
When the organisation of the partial elections in the north is considered, Kosovo's authority must take into account all security, management and policy factors to ensure that elections are inclusive and in calm circumstances”, he has said of the Gazette Express.
The situation in the north deteriorated after, during Tuesday, groups of Serbian citizens in the north prevented the opening of the Central Election Commission offices, causing incidents with firearms and grenades.
Even the American Embassy in Pristina has estimated that fragile security conditions do not allow holding elections as scheduled.
Meanwhile, from the Kosovo Presidency, they have stated that the assessment of the extension of the election date belongs to the institutions of the Republic of Kosovo.
“Pression is in constant inter-institative contact and if a request [from the CEC] comes for the postponement of the elections... President Osmani will invite political subjects for consultations and then make the decision”, President Osmani adviser Bekim Kupina has said.
Belgrade has also rejected the planned elections for the new northern municipalities. Petar Petkovic, director of the so-called “Office on Kosovo”, has said that “Albin Kurti wants to impose elections”.
While Prime Minister Kurti, through a Facebook post Tuesday, has said attacks by Serbian criminal gangs have intensified, but says they are coming to an end. He has said similar attacks are an expression of the uncertainty of criminal networks in the north.
The extraordinary elections in Kosovo were announced in Kosovo, following once-in-a-day resignations from the mayors of northern municipalities that are part of the Serbian List.
