Northern Macedonia President Stevo Pendarovski has said that based on NATO estimates, KFOR troops can keep the situation under control in northern Kosovo even in the event of escalation of the situation there. In an interview for Macedonian television Kanal5, Pendarovski said the situation in the north is not to be underestimated, but believes in the Alliance's ability to manage the situation.
“The situation is not to be underestimated, but NATO has great power there. If NATO with its military forces can stand behind Ukraine, a country of 45 million people, attacked by a country of 145 million people, without underestimateing the situation, I don't think there will be any problem if there is any further escalation of the situation in northern Kosovo”, Pendarovski has declared.
Because of the situation created in this part of Kosovo, the Macedonian president said that every ten days there are talks with KFOR commander because 65 Macedonian soldiers are also participating in the NATO military mission.
He said there should be no additional panic in the opinion regarding the situation in Kosovo, as if there is no need to meet the National Security Council of Northern Macedonia on this issue, as according to Pendarovski, “NATO has the situation under control so far and in the future”.
Some local Serbs have set up barricades in northern Kosovo on December 10th, as a sign of dissatisfaction with the arrest of former Kosovo Serb police officer Dejan Pantic.
Because barricades have blocked roads leading to border crossings, Jarinje and Brnjak connecting Kosovo and Serbia, these two points have been closed for circulation./Rel
