The EU-Western Balkans summit is taking place this Tuesday for the first time in a Balkan country. The bloc's leaders and their counterparts from the six Western Balkan countries: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, Northern Macedonia and Serbia have gathered in Tirana, one day becoming Europe's top centre.
The European Commission's press office described the summit as “an opportunity to reconfirm the great importance of strategic partnership between the EU and the Western Balkans, this region with a clear European perspective”.
The first step of leaders began with the signing of the highly-disputed Ringing tariff reduction agreement. This is an agreement between European Union and Western Balkan operators and will take effect on October 1st 2023.
