Former Kosovo Prime Minister, now Democratic League of Kosovo MP Avdullah Hoti, has said Serbia has become Kosovo's main trade partner.

Hoti through a letter has indicated that imports of goods have increased for 850m euros.

“Imports increase by 850m euros and Serbia returns as Kosovo's main trade partner in the region. During January-October 2022, compared to the same period in 2021, more 850m euros have been imported from abroad. Because exports for this period have increased by only 154m euros, the trade deficit has deepened and reached minus 3.9 billion euros”, Hoti wrote.

According to the former Kosovo prime minister, deepening the trade deficit questions the country's economic growth.

“The deepening of the trade deficit calls into question economic growth, local production and employment in Kosovo, as is being promoted in international conferences”.

Hoti has said that free trade has existed even in the years when those who run today turned trucks with goods from Serbia.

“If we analyse trade with the Western Balkan countries, we see that imports with all these countries have dropped without exception, except with Serbia. One can say that trade is free and that determines imports and exports. I'm fine with that. But free trade has existed even in the years when those who today run trucks with goods from Serbia”.

This very high figure is also being seen by business representatives.

Kosovo Economic Outlook Chairman Lulzim Rafuna says of Periscope that only the Government of Kosovo can lower this balance by simulating local production. According to his statements, the government is not even talking business about these jobs anymore.

According to Kosovo Customs data, import in Serbia from 1 January to 31 December 2021 has been 243m and 466 thousand euros.

Kosovo exports to EU countries reached 37.7m euros, or about 43.7 per cent of total exports, with a 65.5 per cent increase.
