The EU-Western Balkans summit, which will meet on 6 December in Tirana, is the first summit of its kind to be held in the Western Balkan region.
The summit is part of the implementation of the European Council Strategic Agenda 2019-2024, and is considered an opportunity to reconfirm the key importance of strategic partnership between the EU and the Western Balkans, a region with a clear perspective towards the EU.
According to the official agenda published on the Council of the European Union official page, among the main topics of discussion will be: Treating the consequences of Russian aggression against Ukraine; Intensification of political engagement; Strengthening security and building resistance to foreign interventions by addressing challenges posed by migration, fighting terrorism and organised crime.
The last summit between EU and Western Balkan leaders was the EU-Western Balkans Summit in Brdo pri Kranju in October 2021. It was organised by the Slovenian presidency of the Council.
