EU membership application required by government

The Kosovo Government's warning that they will apply for the status of candidate country for membership in the European Union, in mid-December, it has prompted the reaction of opposition parties and connoisseurs of European integrations. They demand from the executive that they in advance have adequate consultation with member states, as obtaining candidate status is a process that lasts over the years. On the other hand, from the government cabinet say that full co-ordination with international allies is in the application.

The deputy chairman of the Democratic League of Kosovo, Albanian Medici, says of Kosova Preris, that prior to the application the Government should show there is will within the EU to accept this Kosovo app.

“Taking up candidate status is the process, which cannot happen overnight. What we have seen is that the Government has promoted that it will apply for membership, but that doesn't mean that we will become a candidate, because this is the process which depends largely on the preconditions set by the EU, so it meets the conditions and then we gain candidate status. But there is another political element, for which the government is in better favour of knowing, whether there is a good will within EU countries to grant Kosovo status, as only Kosovo and Bosnia have remained without such status, as other countries have won this right”, she said.

While, international relations professor Dritero Arifi says of Kosova Prees, granting candidate status for EU membership is difficult because of Kosovo's non-recognition of the five EU countries.

However, he adds, the application is good to take place because it puts the European Union ahead of the act committed.

“Application is good to happen because the EU brings before the act is committed. We have done our job we meet the minimum criteria for opening negotiations or being a candidate country, then it's left to EU countries to decide yes or no...4:58 The Council of Europe consults the European Commission to make a scheme of the state of demand state. The European Parliament's consent is also required, but national parliaments as well. At this point I never believe the Council of Europe will receive approval from national parliaments. At the end of the day, even if you get a blitz we're hypothetically saying, it still needs unanimity within the Council”, he points out.

On the other hand, Foreign Affairs and Diaspora Minister Donika Grovalla has voiced optimism that applying for the country's membership candidate status in the European Union will have results.

There is also very clear strategy about EU membership and there is co-ordination with our partners in both the European Union, but in the EU about our aspirations for EU membership. Not only is there co-ordination but there is also strong support for the aspirations for membership in the European Union”, it said Friday at the Kosovo Assembly session.

Kosovo's aspirations for EU membership applications have emerged since the beginning of 2022 by all institutional leaders.

During this week in Brussels, Kosovo Deputy Prime Minister Besnik Bislimi, who has met with representatives of the European Council and the European Commission to discuss Kosovo's plans for application for EU membership candidate status.

As for Kosovo's EU application plans, the president of the European Council, Charls Michel, has recently spoken, who said this institution will review that app and then come out on foot. / KP
