Elections that fueled tensions postponed -- what happened today in northern Pristina

Today Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani held a meeting with political parties in the country to consult about the situation in the north and extraordinary elections there. But once their meeting in northern Kosovo began, tensions began. There were sirens and local Serbs placed barricades in Rudare of Zvecan, Leposaviqi Soqanic [...]

Osmani meeting with political parties

The meeting, called by President Osmani, began at 2:30, and all political parties participated, except The AAK who refused the invitation.

And at this meeting, the international demand was realised, even though they are not always taking Kosovo's “ ”.

It has been decided that elections in the north will be postponed to April 23, 2023. So said President Osmani, until she added that this decision came after conversations she had with EU officials.

“We discussed the most appropriate date and time and finally with full consensus, after my proposal we came to the conclusion that we should press for April 2023, and the exact date of April, tonight or further tomorrow morning, will be shown to the public”, the president of Kosovo has declared.

I'd like to inform you that I've had contact with EU institutions and that I'm told they won't participate in observation because of the short term. Given those assessments, the proposal was to postpone municipal elections. We've come to the conclusion of being postponed for April”, she told reporters.

What happened in the north while Osman's meeting with political parties was being held?

Following former Kosovo police member Dejan Pantic's arrest, local Serbs, as a sign of dissatisfaction, gathered in Rudare in Zvecan, where trucks and ambulances are located.

For the arrest of former police officer Pantic, the chief of the Office for Kosovo in Serbia's Government, Petar Petkovic, also reacted.

Petkov didn't wait long. He said he has announced the event to the special representative of the European Union for dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia, Miroslav Lajcak.

Following Dejan Pantic's arrest, Interior Minister Jhelal Svecla reacted.

Through a post in his Facebook account, Svecla said the reason Pantic has been arrested concerned with charges against him of “terrorist attacks” in the offices of the Municipal Election Commission, where CEC officials and Kosovo police were attacked.

Kosovo's “Police today have detained at the Jarinje Border Point the former police official, former MUP member who was formerly integrated into the Kosovo Police, Dejan Pantic. The detainee according to evidence by the Kosovo Police has organised the terrorist attack on the KKZ's offices in the country's north by what cases were attacked by CEC officials and police officials. Pantic is accused of committing terrorist acts and assaulting constitutional order”, Svecla wrote.

International call for postponement of elections in the north

After groups of Serbian citizens in the north prevented the opening of the Central Election Commission offices, causing incidents of firearms and grenades, the US and Germany have demanded that elections in the north be postponed.

The US estimated there are no conditions for holding elections in northern Kosovo on December 18th.

US Ambassador to Pristina Jeffrey Hovenier said the security of all Kosovo citizens “should be the highest priority”.

“Returning to violence and intimidation, including the use of an explosive device, and risking lives are never an appropriate method of protest, under no circumstance”, Hovier wrote in Titter.

The Germans agreed.

Germany's ambassador to Kosovo, Jorn Rohde, has said it is of reconciliation with US Ambassador Jeff Havenier, who elections in the north should be postponed.

Rohde has written on Friday in Titter that the current situation is not in favour of holding elections now.

I agree with my American colleague that elections should be postponed. Clearly, the current situation is not conducive to their holding now”, Rohde wrote on Titter./Iliriana Jylan-Periscope
