Belgian investigators searched the offices of the European Parliament in Brussels in an investigation into alleged bribery by Qatar, host of the World Cup. It was the 20th check conducted in Belgium since Friday and parliament president Roberta Metsola, warned the eurodatas that “democracy is under attack”.
Belgian police have arrested four people, including European Parliament Vice President Eva Kaili, a Greek Eurodeputte. Qatar has denied any wrongdoing. Eurodeputs will debate the scandal Tuesday.
Belgian prosecutors said some 600,000 euros were found in the home of a suspect -- 150,000 euros in the residence of a Eurodeput and several hundred thousand euros in a suitcase in a hotel room in Brussels. Computers and mobile phones have also been taken along.
Since Friday, the sources of IT of 10 parliamentary employees have <x0 strong> to prevent the disappearance of data needed for the investigation. The four suspects arrested by Belgian police have been charged with “participating in a criminal organisation, money laundering and corruption”, prosecutors said in a statement Sunday.
Kaili, a eurodeputte for eight years, was suspended from her post as one of 14 vice-presidents by Parliament President Metsola. It has also been suspended by the Party of Socialists and Democrats in parliament, and has been excluded from the centre-left Greek party Passok.
