The 69-year-old Frenchman, who opened fire at a Kurdish community cultural centre in Paris, told investigators that he was a racist, a close source said Saturday.
The shooting caused panic in streets filled with shops and cafes in the French capital's 10th fashion district.
The weapon the assailant had used was a highly used “pistol” of the US Army Colt 1911.
French President Emmanuel Macron said the <x0kurds in France have been the target of a heart attack on Paris” and ordered the Paris police chief to meet with Kurdish community leaders on Saturday.
According to the Kurdish Democratic Council in France (CDK-F), the dead are two men and one woman.
After the attack, protests were also held in Paris.
The prosecution in Paris said the 69-year-old suspect had recently been released from custody while awaiting the start of the trial for a sword attack at a centre of migrants. The attack took place last year and several people were injured.
Hours after the attack, Kurdish protesters clashed with police, who used tear gas to disperse protesters.
Protesters threw hard spots towards police, including garbage bins, and damaged restaurant tables.
They said they were expressing anger over the attack, adding that French security forces do little to prevent it. /rel
