In September and October 1989, a group of writers and intellectuals, at the time of the greatest political and social concerns in Kosovo, agreed to establish a political party.
This group appointed the LDK chairmanship with president Dr. Ibrahim Rugova, secretary Yusuf Bujowi and members of the leadership: Dr. Fehmi Agan, Dr. Bujar Bukoshi, Dr. Ali Aliu, Nekibe Kelmendi, Mehmet Kraja, of many of the then renowned writers and intellectuals.
“In the time of the worst Serbian and Yugoslav depression against the people of Kosovo, The LDK organised political and civic resistance, organized social, political and public life, promoting freedom of speech, freedom of expression, tolerance and humanity, promoting authentic and universal values. The LDK, from the beginning, emerged as an institutional political force, working hard and sacrifice for building Kosovo's democratic institutions as the fundamental basis of the state, so that it does not slip into anarchy, arbitrators and dictatorship”, is said in the history of this party.
Immediately after the recent war in Kosovo, The LDK, led by Ibrahim Rugova, won the elections in earnest.
The Democratic League of Kosovo says it engages in democracy, which will ensure the full legal and political equality of all citizens, regardless of national, gender or religious affiliation.
Kosovo's “Democratic League embraces political pluralism that expresses different structures and interests, which enables the race of different coalitions and options through the parliamentary and multi-party system; engages in full protection and for expanding human rights and freedoms, for the right to think and free speech, for freedom of political organisation. The LDK fights against any form of hatred, violence and national and religious intolerance, against any form of discrimination and genocide, against any attempt to violent change of existing ethnic structures. It is committed against any political monopoly and ideological exclusiveity, for freedom of conscience and political beliefs, committed to the independence of judiciary”, the party says.
The LDK says it welcomes and supports integration processes in modern Europe.
Currently, the LDK for its leader has Lumir Abdixhiku.
To mark its 33rd anniversary, the LDK has organised a series of activities during today.
