President Voldymyr Zelensky visited the town of Kherson several days after he was released from Ukrainian troops. He offered encouragement to his war-affected allies as Kiev forces continue to gain ground in the south.
He spoke to the soldiers, saying Ukraine is “walking ahead of” and ready for peace, the BBC writes.
We all feel our victory is approaching. There are always people fighting and working for our” victory, Zelensky stressed.
Zelensky thanked soldiers, doctors and diplomats for their continued work in Ukraine since Russia launched the fight against its neighbour more than eight and a half months ago.
The Ukrainian Army achieved great success last week where, after successful counterattacks, the Russians in the southern region of Kherson withdrew from the regional capital with the same name and other cities on the right or west coast of the Dnipro River.
The loss of Kherson, taken in the early stages of the occupation, is a major obstacle to Russia, although Moscow insists it is still Russian territory.
Russia had declared that administrative centre of the illegally annexed Kherson region and was the only regional capital to be occupied.
Kherson was captured in March, in one of Russia's main early successes in the war.
The region was then one of four illegally annexed after the so-called referenda that were held in September.
