A man believed to be the manager of the store opened fire on people and then turned his gun on himself.
The city of Chesapeake wrote on Twitter: “Police confirm an active incident of the victim shooting in Walmart”.
There are few details, but a police officer spoke of no more than ten people killed and many injured. The motive for this event is not known until now.
Police told reporters the attack occurred at 10:12 local time there. spokesperson Leo Kosinski said the shooting is believed to have occurred inside the store and that the suspect has acted alone.
Virginia state Senator Louise Lucas said she was “ably heartbreaking” from what she described as the last “shooting in America”.
Tuesday's evening attack comes just days after an armed person opened fire at an LGBT nightclub in the American state of Colorado, killing five people and injuring 17 others, the BBC writes.
