UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said world leaders must co-operate to resolve climate change challenges, or humanity will face extinction.
Guterres directed the call with emphasis to the US and China, as two of the world's largest polluting states.
The annual United Nations Summit on Climate Change has started operations in Egypt this year, with calls for countries to pass “from the era of pledges to the implementation age”.
The UN urged countries to reach a climate solidarity agreement, which would include sufficient financial support for poor countries so that they will be able to cope with the effects of global warming.
Guterres reiterated calls for setting a tax on the big profits of oil production companies.
He had declared earlier that states should prioritize climate change, or the world will face disaster.
More than 120 world leaders are expected to give speeches at this conference, known as COP27.
The leaders will talk at this conference on Monday and Tuesday, and after their departure, the delegations will start negotiations on what can be done. / REL
