Republicans secured the sufficient number of seats Wednesday to win the majority in the US House of Representatives, preparing the grounds for two years of divided governance in terms when President Joe Biden's Democratic Party maintained control of the Senate.

The victory gives the Republicans the opportunity to contain Mr. Beden's programme, as well as open investigations that could be politically harmful to Mr. Biden's administration and family, although this victory is far from the “red wave” the party had hoped for.

The final forecast for the republican victory in the House of Representatives came after more than a week of counting votes, when the organisation Edison Research concluded that the Republicans have won the 218 seats needed to control the Chamber.

The republican victory in Congress's 27th district of California gave the party the advantage.

The current leader of the House of Representatives republics, Kevin McCarty, may have faced a difficult road, as he will have to keep his group united for critical voting, including the government and military budget, at a time when former President Donald Trump has announced his candidacy to receive the White House once more.

Although the loss of the Democrats presents difficulties for President Beden, he extended the hand of co-operation, praising the republics and saying he would work with them to produce results for Americans. The American people want us to work for them,” he said in a statement issued by the White House. “I will work with all Republicans or Democrats, who are willing to work with me to produce results for them,” he said.

Even though the “red wave” in the House of Representatives that the Republicans expected failed to materialise, the conservatives are maintaining their schedule. They are preparing to undertake investigations into President Beden's administration officials, as well as the president's son, Hunter, for his business relations with China and other countries, even for Mr. Biden himself.

On the international front, Republicans may seek to reduce US military and economic assistance to Ukraine.

The United States returns to a divided power in Washington after voters split in opposite directions, motivated by two key issues during the campaign for mid-term elections.

High inflation gave the republics material to attack liberals, who approved trillion dollars in new expenditures during the COVID-19 pandemic. Increasing the cost of food, fuel and housing made voters dissatisfied with the Democrats.

On the other hand, the Supreme Court's June ruling, which ended federal protection for abortion rights, motivated a large portion of voters, strengthening the positions of democratic candidates.

Nearly a third of voters said after voting that inflation was at the top of their concerns. For a quarter of voters, abortion was the main concern and 61% rejected the Supreme Court's ruling on the issue.

The mid-term elections were held under the shadow of the 2024 presidential race.

Former President Trump continues to be the Republicans' favourite candidate for the party's presidential election. However, the far-right candidates he backed got poor results on November 8th.

In the meantime, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis - considered one of the strongest potential rivals for Mr. Trump in 2024 - won a second term, easily defeating Democrat rival Charlie Crist, with nearly 20 percent advantage.

The former president is said to be angry with the high estimates political experts were giving to Mr. DeSantis.

The 2024 elections will immediately affect many of the legislative decisions that follow the republics of the House of Representatives, as they bend their muscles with a new majority found, however narrow.

Now the House of Representatives has to elect the mayor for the next two years. Republican House of Representatives leader McCarty won parliamentary majority support Tuesday to run for the strong position that would follow the current Democrat Nancy Pelosi. / VOA
