Montenegro is a NATO member and candidate to join the European Union.

The 620,000-strong country declared independence from Serbia in 2006, but about a third of its population is identified as Serbs, and some believe Montenegro should not be a separate country.

Nebojsa Mrvajevic from the Free Citizens' Forum and the protest organiser said the petition for holding early parliamentary elections so far has signed 30,000 citizens.

Among the politicians attending the rally were opposition officials The DPS, the Social Democrats, the Social Democrats and the Liberal Party.

With the law on presidential competencies amended, the current parliamentary majority is trying to transfer some of Djukanovic's competencies to the appointment of candidates to Parliament.

The opposition sees the call for early parliamentary elections as a breakthrough from the political crisis in which Montenegro is located after the fall of the two governments since the beginning of the year.
