U.S. Attorney General Merrick B. Garland announced today the appointment of former Justice Department Justice Office and former chief prosecutor for The Hague special court Jack Smith as the Special Prosecutor to oversee two US criminal investigations linked to former US president Donald Trump.

During Smith's handling of cases, there was a flow of documents related to investigations conducted against KLA leaders. For this leak, two OVL leaders -- Hysni Gucati and Nasim Haradinaj -- were arrested and sentenced.

According to the US Justice Department report, Smith will investigate the first case, linked to the transfer of power following the 2020 presidential elections in the US, or the Certificate of the Electoral College vote, held on January 6, 2021 and about that date.

The second “is the ongoing investigation involving classified documents and other presidential data, as well as possible obstruction of that investigation, referred and described in the judicial files presented in an pending case in the South Florida District”, the DoJ report said.

“Based on recent developments, including the former president's announcement that he is a presidential candidate in the upcoming elections, as well as the president's stated intention to be a candidate as well, I have concluded that it is in the public's interest to appoint a Special Prosecutor,”, General Prosecutor Garland has said at a news conference today.

“Such appointment underscores the department's commitment to independence and accountability on particularly sensitive issues. It also allows prosecutors and agents to continue their work quickly and to make verdicts of execution guided only by facts, and law” has continued.

The attorney general also stated: “even though the Special Prosecutor would not submit to the daily oversight of any department official, he should comply with the regulations, procedures and policies of the Department. I would ensure that the Special Attorney gets the resources to do this job quickly and completely. Given the work done so far and Mr. Smith's legal experience, I am confident that this appointment will not slow down the outcome of these investigations. Men and women who are pursuing these investigations are conducting themselves in line with the highest standards of professionalism. I can't be proud of them anymore. I strongly believe that the normal processes of this department can address all integrity investigations. And I also believe that assigning a Special Prosecutor at this time is the right thing to do. They look for the extraordinary circumstances presented here. Mr. Smith is the right choice to end these issues equally and urgently”, he has declared.

Prior to taking office in the US, the DoJ reports that special prosecutor Smith has resigned as chief prosecutor of the special court in The Hague in charge of investigating and judging war crimes in Kosovo.
