The purpose of the meetings was to address critical challenges in relations between Kosovo and Serbia. Discussions focused on helping the parties find urgent solutions to the current crisis and preserving peace and stability.
Borrell, accompanied by EU Special Representative Miroslav Lajcak, reiterated that the parties should engage constructively, show readiness for a compromise and respect their commitments in the dialogue.
The current geopolitical environment makes it even more necessary to overcome past heritages and engage in meaningful negotiations about what really matters to Kosovo, Serbia, their people and the entire region of ʹ that is normalising relations between the two sides as a key factor to moving forward on their European path”, Borrell has said.
Kosovo's”Serbs must return immediately to Kosovo institutions and resume their duties, and Kosovo should harmonise its actions on the license plate with the past dialogue agreements and start negotiations on establishing the Association of Serb majority municipalities without further delay. These obligations, taken within the dialogue, remain valid and mandatory. ”
At the same time, Borrell underlined the importance of refraining from any unilateral action and promotional rhetoric.
With war in Ukraine, Europe cannot have another conflict on its soil. It is the responsibility of the parties to avoid it for the benefit of their own people, who will lose more if the actual escalation of behavior does not change.
The inability to meet obligations and rapid escalation will have harmful consequences primarily for people in Kosovo and Serbia, for the European future of both sides and their credibility in the eyes of European and international partners. ”
The High Representative will brief the EU Member States on Monday to the Council of Foreign Affairs about his discussions and give his analysis of the situation.
