Khan was leading a protest in Islamabad to demand early elections.
An armed person reportedly opened fire while former Prime Minister Khan was giving a speech to supporters in Wazirad.
The politician left the scene, and his supporters said he survived a assassination attempt.
Khan left power in April. He has given harsh speeches at gatherings held in various parts of the country.
He was on the sixth day of a march from Lahore to Islamabad in an effort to secure early elections when shootings occurred.
A large number of people had gathered to hear former Prime Minister Khan's speech. Reporter Cordelia Lynch said she just interviewed the politician for the risk of violence. He described the march as a peaceful protest when suddenly a riot occurred
