Lula's victory in Brazil is also good news for the world

The extraordinary return of leftist politician Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva for the third term as president of Brazil is not only good news for his country. His victory over the incumbent right-wing extremist, Jair Bolsonaro, is also good news for the world. Since Bolsonaro came into office in the year [...]

Since Bolsonaro came into office in 2019, mountain burning and deforestation reached the highest levels in the Amazon, with the federal government closing its eye on illegal cuts, digging, non-lawed pasture, and land robbery.

Brazil's forests passed from a carbon sink to a carbon source. If this were allowed to continue, the damage to the world's slaves would be unimproved - with devastating effects on the world weather system and food safety.

Lula, as is generally known, pledged to review policies of ancestors who have exacerbated climate emergency. As a result, the world will breathe more freely. But Bolsonaro has lost his election by narrow results. By the time I write, he has refused to accept defeat. Bolsonaro, who has praised dictatorship and torture, may never accept people's will, but those who have supported it - from Evangelical to political allies - have agreed that the race is already lost. His reluctance to be inexorable may be because he fears he might end up behind the cell.

The presidential immunity has assisted in the Bolsonaro shield and its political allies from investigations into current corruption and embezzlement allegations. For Bolsonaron, this shield will disappear in January.

Bolsonaro was known as the “Trump of tropicals” and he used a similar handle. Like former US president, Bolsonaro has polarised his divided country by denigrating women, homosexuals and minorities. He armed his supporters by taking “ ” the location with weapons.

The pandemic that killed nearly 700 thousand people helped increase the number of poor people at record levels and caused it to sink in the polls. His response was to distribute <x0faque nine x1>, carry out social assistance payments and send federal highway police to block roads in pro-Lula regions on election day. But enough Brazilians returned to Lula, whose last term in power had spurred economic growth and reduced inequality.

Jailed by the previous right government for alleged corruption, Lula was acquitted and charges against him were dropped last year, allowing him to run again. However, Brazil is now another country compared to what it led last time. When he left the office in 2010, the rating rate for Lulan was stratosphere. Now, a small minority thinks the former president and their future president are corrupt.

In 2010, Brazil was the world's seventh economy -- now falling to 13th place. The country is now marked by increased interest rates and deepening divisions. Brazil's modest economic recovery is not expected to last as the world faces a recession that Brazil will not avoid.

Lula's victory cannot overshadow the fact that he faces a Congress dominated by conservative politicians from the Centrao (big centre) centre -- who are lined up with Bolsonaron.

The new president will have to have reconciliation agreements to pass legislation. Deep structural reforms that need changes to the constitution will probably be outside the table.

Thanks to its environmentalist policies and its protection of democracy, Lula can count on supporting the world's top leaders. President Joe Biden has offered to set up a $20 billion fund for the Amazon as soon as Brazil begins to show results in protecting its forests. Under Bolsonaro's leadership, Brazil lost its way and his mind. Lula's victory proves that the country can return to the path of sound mind. /Periscopi/
