Lawyer at The Hague: Smith's resignation can cause procrastination

The lawyer accredited in the Special Chambers, Artan Qerkeyni, has spoken of Chief Prosecutor Jack Smith's sudden resignation, saying his resignation would cause further delays in the trial of former KLA leaders. “I believe his resignation will cause further delays in starting this process as well [...]
“I believe that his resignation will cause further delays in the beginning of this process, even extended”, Qerkeyni said.
The lawyer said it is unusual that Smith is the second chief prosecutor to resign from the task in a short period.
Qerkeyni said it is necessary for Smith's successor to adhere to professional standards.
“Until now, the defence team has justly blamed the prosecution for dragging the process, because the prosecution had claimed it was ready for the trial since June 2021, while it still has not handed over all the evidence to the defence, so for the defense, the important thing is to come to a chief prosecutor who would have stood by professional standards and standards for a quick and efficient trial, because in cases where defendants are in custody, the procedure should develop in a special way, while until now we have seen a procrastination which has not been the consequences of the prosecution.
I don't want to speculate about Mr. Smith's reasons for his resignation, but one thing is certain, the prosecution case is not strong”, Qericin said.
