Prime Minister Albin Kurti is holding a meeting with Serbia's president, Aleksandar Vuciq, with the mediation of European Union for Foreign Policy High Representative Josep Borrell. This meeting is being held with the aim of reaching an agreement on illegal license plates, while tomorrow the rowing fine of such plates begins.
Analyst Ilir Ibrahimi estimates that holding a trilateral meeting especially on the issue of license plates is going back into the process.
The “Tarchs are not the main dispute between Kosovo and Serbia, but there is one of dozens of technical issues which could be resolved with a comprehensive agreement”, he told Kankosova.tv.
Ibrahim said that whatever this meeting brings, what is known is that the Kosovar side has placed itself in an inexorable position.
“The US and EU have had two demands on the recent Kosovo side of delaying the license decision and the beginning of the establishment of association. As long as Vuciq wants what the international community has asked for, and the Kosovo side will remain alone on one side, and Serbia in co-ordination with world powers”.
Abraham says that coming to this situation is discouraging.
“How the time has come for us to have such a alignment is really discouraging and evidence of an thoughtless approach of the government to foreign policy in general and in the process of dialogue in particular. Let's not forget, the demand for postponement of the license plates has come from Secretary Blinken. To ignore this request and go negotiate a possible postponement with President Vuqiq, Commissioner Borrell and envoy Lajqak, is not the wise tactical”, he said.
That Kosovo is in a poor position, says the other analyst, Dritaro Arifi, as he estimates from this meeting there are two options.
This appointment is two options. The most positive option is for the two sides to find common language and at the end of the day come up with an agreement, while the other option is not to reach agreement, but that still, Government Kurti will be forced to postpone the decision. Each option is surrender to Kosovo, as it has long had to postpone the decision to fine Serbian citizens. This means that the Government is leaving without saying, because even it would have to speak to me with Serbian citizens in the north so that a solution could be reached. This is the delivery of the Government due to reckless decisions”, Arifi said.
However, if Kurt is not released and continues with the second phase of the decision on illegal license plates, fines, Arifi says it will bring frustration and intimidation to citizens.
“If there is no agreement and Kurti decides to continue the fine decision, citizens will be irritated and afraid, that will bring tensions. I'm going to lose faith in Government”.
Arifi said that regardless of the final outcome of this meeting, Vuciqi is the winner.
We didn't understand what position we were in. He's still a winner because he's playing our territory”
