Millions of residents of the capital area suffer from power cuts due to Russian attacks, but this year the trees will appear without their lights to save electricity.
Kiev Mayor Vitaly Klitschko told the RBC-Ukraine news agency that: “We cannot let Putin steal our Christmas. No one's going to cancel New Year's and Christmas, and the New Year's atmosphere should be there”
Klitschko said Christmas trees will be placed “to remind our children of New Year's humor” adding: “I don't want to remove Santa from children”.
The mayor said there will be no mass gatherings or concerts, a tradition to host the New Year.
City businesses will sponsor trees throughout Kiev, including Sophia Square in the Old Kiev district.
Russia has conducted continued missile attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure since early October.
Ukrainian officials and allies have raised concerns about how residents will weather the winter, amid power cuts, damage to central heating supplies and lower temperatures.
