The three young men and women were probably sleeping when they were attacked Sunday on November 13th, said the district legal doctor Latif Mabbutt.
They were hit several times with a rather large “thic”, she added.
No arrests have been made, and police in Moscow's college city have warned that the killer could still pose a threat.
More than 25 investigators are working on the case with the help of FBI and Idahos State Police.
The female victims were named like the friends of Madison Mogen, 21, by Coeur d'Alene, Idaho; Kaylee Goncalves, 21, from Rathdrum, Idaho; and Xana Kernodle, 20, from Post Falls, Idaho.
Ethan Chappin, 20, of Mount Vernon, Washington, was Kernodle's boyfriend.

After police were alarmed by a call to emergency services, victims were found dead Sunday afternoon.
Two others at home were found intact.
“cannot say there is no threat to the community,” said Moscow Police Chief James Fry.
“We still believe it is a target attack. But the reality is there is still one person there who committed four very terrible crimes. ”
Speaking of NewsNation's cable news channel, the legal doctor said: “must be someone angry enough to stab four people”.
It doesn't even seem like anything was stolen from victims or homes, CBS News reports, and there was no sign of forced entry, writes BBC.
A door was found open by the first police effectors to have arrived at the scene.
The search for weapons in nearby baskets continues, and local businesses were contacted to determine whether they recently sold a fixed edged knife.
The university will host a candlelight vigilante for four victims on November 30th.
