Who's Alex Whiting?
Whiting, 58, is a prosecutor of French-American nationality with extensive experience in local and international criminal proceedings. He has been working in the SPS since June 2019, originally as the head of the investigation, and beginning August 2020 as the specialised prosecutor's deputy.
Whiting has come to the SPS from Harvard Law School, where he has been working as a professor of legal practice since 2013.
Between 2010 and 2013, Whiting was part of the Prosecutor's Office in the JPN, where he first worked as the Coordinator of Investigations, overseeing all investigations, and then as the Coordinator of Criminal Procedures, overseeing all prosecutions. Before becoming part of the JGPN, Whiting has been teaching for three years as assistant law professor at Harvard Law School.
Between 2002 and 2007, Whiting has worked for the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (TPNJ), where it has been chief prosecutor of the case in the trial of Fatmir Limaj, Isak Musliu, and Haradin Bala, and chief prosecutor of the case in the judgments of Milan Martic and Dragomir Milosevic.
Before becoming part of TPNJ, Whitting was a federal prosecutor in the United States, originally at the Department of Criminal Affairs at the Civil Rights Division in Washington, DC and then with the US Prosecutor's Office in Boston, Massachusetts, where it is focused on cases of organised crime and corruption.
Whiting is a graduate of Yale College and Yale College.
Smith leaves the SPS and assumes the post of Special Adviser in the United States to oversee two ongoing criminal investigations, named in this post by the U.S. Attorney General Merrick B. Garland.
Smith has been appointed specialised prosecutor in May 2018 and has assumed his posts in September 2018.
