Belarus's Foreign Minister Vladimir Makei, who held his post since 2012, has died at the age of 64, state news agency Belta reported.
He took part in a conference this week at the Association of Collective Security Treaty (CSTO) a military alliance of several post-Soviet states in Yerevan and would meet with Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov on Monday.
Before presidential elections and massive antigovernmental protests in Belarus in 2020, Makei had been one of the initiatives to improve Belarus's relations with the West and had criticised Russia.
But he suddenly changed his stance when the protests began, saying they were inspired by Western agents.
“We are shocked by reports of the death of the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus, Vladimir Makei”, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova posted on her TV channel.
Belarus is one of Russia's most staunch allies, especially since the war in Ukraine began on 24 February.
