When Russian missiles were targeted so close to Poland's border, and when Ukraine's air defence was activated to hit them, it was probably only a matter of time before something like that happened.
The fact that a missile fell on Poland's border is certainly a disturbing development, not just for Poland, but for all states on the western borders of Russia and Ukraine.
So says Frank Gardner, BBC News security correspondent.
On the other hand, he says Moldova has already complained about the effect of Russian missiles released near its borders.
But what matters here is what the target was, whoever launched the missile. And so far there is no indication that Russia was deliberately targeting somewhere beyond the borders of Ukraine”, says Gardner.
The Kremlin, he says, knows such an act would potentially activate Article 5 of NATO's constitution, bringing the entire alliance to Poland's defence.
“NATO does not want to be in this position, especially one day after Russia and America's spying chiefs have just met to discuss how to avoid unnecessary escalation in this” war.
The largest share of Ukraine's vital supplies with defence weapons passes through Poland. If he was deliberately targeted, it would be another matter. But here it doesn't look like this”, he said.
