White House rejects concerns that Ukraine's support is diminishing

White House Press Secretary Karin Jean-Pierre dismissed the growing concerns that republican lawmakers will not continue to provide aid to Ukraine if they regain control of the House of Representatives in the November elections in Congress. “The United States has offered Ukraine powerful two-party support,” it said [...]

“The United States has offered Ukraine powerful two-party support,”, she told reporters Wednesday. “We will continue to work with Congress as we have done in these last few months and will support Ukraine as long as it should. ”

The United States has authorized more than $60 billion in aid to Ukraine, with more than $17 billion in security support since the start of the war in February.

The minority leader in the House of Representatives Kevin McCarty, however, indicated that aid could slow down if the room is controlled by the Republicans.

On Tuesday, Mr. McCarty told the Punchbowl News page that as soon as a recession arrives, Americans will not write “a white Czech” Ukraine. “They just won't. ...It's not a free check,” he said.

Ukrainians, who are still shocked by the fears and Russian rocket attacks in their capital, Kiev and other cities, leaving most of the country without electricity, are closely following the election process for the American Congress, said Olena Shuliak, head of the ruling Ukrainian People's Servant Party.

Our people die every day. Every day, we stand protecting democracy worldwide,” she said Ukrainian American Voice Service. You can see what's going on every day with the bombings and destruction of our homes and the killing of our people you can't lower your support”.

Observers say that with increased insulation trends in the Republican Party, some worry that aid to Ukraine will fade, especially on humanitarian and economic needs. However, there is less concern about US security assistance, given that the Republicans generally support the industrial military complex, said Christine Berzina, a senior member of security and defence policy at the German Marshall Fund of the United States.

“What is the desperate need of Europeans now in Ukraine and throughout the east wing [ NATO? There's a need for weapons systems, everything from ammunition to highly sophisticated weapons systems like HIMARS [high-powered Arterial Artillery Systems], fears”, said Mrs. Bertine for the Voice of America. The defence budgets are growing so significantly in Europe that increased defence spending is exceeding what is available. ”

In May, Congress voted for more than $40 billion new military and humanitarian aid, with 57 Republican House of Representatives voting against the package.

Focus on China

Putting aside the near recession, some republican lawmakers have signaled that the US should focus more on the threat of raising China military.

There are many members who want to see more responsibility in the Department of Defence and a greater focus on the threats there,” told reporters last month Steve Scalise, the republican leader in the House of Representatives. “Kina is moving very aggressively to build a naval fleet, and now our fleet is down”.

Mrs. Berzyn said the conflict in Ukraine is a testing ground not only of Western technology, but of its commitment to protecting a partner against an aggressor.

The competitive military environment in Ukraine is giving reasons to defence companies to modernise and invest in weapons technologies, many of which are being tested in Ukrainian battlefields.

This will be important if there is a conflict with China in the future,” she said.

China, she added, is also learning from the Western response to Moscow's expansionist ambitions.

Any kind of license in Ukraine also has implications,” she said. “How tough will the United States be when it comes to Taiwan?”

Some republican lawmakers have also cited a need for greater assistance oversight sent to Ukraine and have complained that the US is carrying more financial burdens than other NATO members.

Observers say the ban on US support for Ukraine would eliminate Kiev's benefits on the battlefield and could change the course of war.

“A is better to make an investment in Ukrainian protection now before protecting half of the European continent?” asked Mrs. Berzina. So there's a conservative fiscal argument to stop it now before the problem becomes so big that the U.S. should invest more money in larger countries. /voa
