Slovenian President: EU membership, only way to prevent Balkan divisions

The only way to prevent divisions in the Balkans is for the entire Balkans to join the European Union, Slovenia's President Borut Pahor said at Forum 2 BS in Budva, on a panel with Montenegrin President Milo Djukanovic. Pahor urged the leaders of the region to do everything in [...] power.
Pahor called on leaders of the region to do everything in their power to preserve peace in the Balkans, writes Anadolu, broadcast Klankosova.tv.
“We do not know what will happen in the coming months or years. But it is important that these multilateral issues be under control. The level of trust is low”, Pahor said.
The Slovenian president recalled that there was some optimism, but he had fallen, stressing that there is less will in Brussels.
Because of the war in Ukraine, peace and stability in the Balkans are fragile. We tried to explain this to the EU as well. In 2016, during talks in Sarajevo, we said enlargement is not a technical problem, but a geopolitical problem and we should be more flexible in Brussels”, Pahor said at the 2BS Forum.
Pahor listed what Brussels expects to do in the coming period to bring the Western Balkans closer to membership in the European Union.
“These are visa liberalisation, granting candidate Bosnia and Herzegovina status. That would be a signal that the EU is doing everything to bring the entire Western Balkans to the European community”, Pahor noted.
He believes that if it comes to enlargement, all Balkan countries will join more or less in the same period.
