Renowned Pakistani journalist Arshad Sharif has been shot dead Sunday by police in Kenya.
He was severely injured as a passenger in a moving vehicle, according to a police statement and failed to survive injuries, reports abcnews.al.
Sharif was a critic of the Pakistani Army, as well as a vocal supporter of ousted Prime Minister Imran Khan.
The 49-year-old had left Pakistan in August after complaining of harassment.
Kenya's police supervisor, the Independent Police Supervisor Authority (Ipoa), said he had sent his quick reaction team to the location of the shooting in Cajiado County near the capital, Nairobi.
An investigation has started in Kenya after journalists in the Pakistani town of Karac on Monday held a street protest for his murder.
The team will investigate the alleged <x0) police murder of a Pakistani citizen”, Ipoa Mayor Ann Makori told reporters.
Pakistan's Prime Minister Shephazam Sharif wrote on Twitter that he was “deeply grieved by the shocking news of the tragic death of journalist Archad Sharif”.
In a brief message on Twitter, Sharif's wife, Yaveria Siddique, said she had lost a <x0mic, husband and her favorite journalist”.
Calling for a necessary <x0/judgment “, former Prime Minister Khan said it was “shocked” from what he described as “suicide”, adding that it “paid the final price for telling truth”.
Khan was removed from power in April after losing a no-confidence vote. Sharif, who had supported Mr. Khan, later began to complain that the country's Federal Investigation Agency was bothering him and he left the country.
