Norway is now the biggest exporter of natural gas to the European Union, sending about a quarter of its supplies to the EU, after Russia banned remittances.
“This is the worst security situation in several decades”, Norway's Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere said on October 31st.
“There is no indication that Russia is expanding its fight in other states, but increasing tensions make us more exposed to threats, intelligence operations and influential campaigns”, he added.
The Norwegian Armed Forces will spend more time in operational tasks than in the exercise, and the Interior Guard, which is a force of rapid mobilization, will have a more active role, said Norwegian Defence Minister Byern Arild Gram.
Meanwhile, the Norwegian Armed Forces have cancelled their exercises with the United States with F35 warplanes, preferring these planes to remain in Norway, said armed forces head General Eric Christoffersen.
“We expect this situation to last at least one year”, Christoffersen said.
Norway had previously deployed its forces on its gas platforms after leaks were discovered in the North Stream pipeline 1 and 2.
Russia has begun occupying Ukraine on February 24th and has recently faced loss of territory after the launch of a counteroffensive by Kiev forces.
