Croatian President Zoran Milanovic said today that Croatia has obligations only to NATO and anyone else, and that the decision made in Brussels for training Ukrainian soldiers in Croatia does not force anyone.
If, he says, someone attacks Poland or Lithuania, that is another matter.
If Croatia attacks Serbia and enters war, should NATO offer us help and protection? Maybe, maybe not. Even NATO members are expected to be rational and to take care of others, we are many. And this obligation to come to the aid of another NATO member is an obligation of 1949. It's been 73 years, every rule lives its life and I take this rule seriously, but we also need our reasonable behavior not to get into any bigger problems than we need”, Milanic said.
“Croatia will not attack Serbia and Serbia will not attack Croatia, clearly, but I am telling Dosko's con men that speak of certain Croatian obligations. Where were they when I blew for Bosnian Croats for a year? The State as a concept is a selfish creation, you surrounded it with boundaries to take care of yourself”.
For the decision on training Ukrainian soldiers in Croatia, which, according to Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic, has already been taken, Milanovic says that anyone who fully understands the law knows that this implies Croatia's participation in war.
The state of war does not exist legally, but it does exist. This is a line that I do not allow to pass”, Milanovic said, adding that these are not military issues, but the matter of fate and safety of a country and people who, as he said, await the best life here.
He is convinced, he stresses, that he is doing the right thing and that he is on the side of history that is important to Croatia, as he says, our side of history.
Our “position is such that we must take care of ourselves”, the Croatian president said.
He has again criticised Croatian Foreign Affairs Minister Gordan Grliq-Radman, who, he adds, voted in Brussels the decision for Croatian national security and Croatian armed forces, which have a commander-general. He has remembered that this decision has been made without his knowledge, which emphasizes, is unconstitutional.
That decision does not impose on anyone. This is a message for all commentators who claim Croatia has an obligation but does not, let them beat the muffs with something else. Croatia has an obligation to NATO... and no one else,”, Milanovic said.
