The balance of victims and damages left behind by Hurricane Ian in the United States is tragic. 50 deaths have been confirmed, most of them in Lee County, Florida, yet the number of victims is expected to be much higher.
CNN reports that heavy rainfall caused widespread flooding in South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia. Nearly 1.2 million homes and businesses in Florida were without power on Saturday.
US President Joe Biden said Hurricane Ian is probably one of the worst in the country's history.
“We have just begun to see the extent of destruction that is likely among the worst in the history of the United States”, Biden said.
According to estimates, the passage of Hurricane Ian could cost tens of billions of dollars to insurance companies, and would burden the American economy mainly because of flight failure and damage to agricultural production.
