The Haitian government authorized Prime Minister Ariel Henry to seek armed assistance due to the “risk of a major humanitarian crisis”.
A group of powerful gangs have blocked the country's main fuel terminal since September, halting and damaging basic supplies such as water and food, reports the BBC, broadcasts Klonkosova.tv.
It is not clear to whom the demand for intervention was sent and in what form the help would be provided.
The UN said it has not received an official request from the Haitian government.
The US is considering the request for humanitarian corridors to restore fuel distribution within Haiti, according to State Department spokesman Vedant Patel.
Haiti is one of the poorest countries in the world and has suffered a series of crises, eventually killing its president, Jovenel Moïs, and in July 2021, there was a massive earthquake that left more than 22,000 people dead.
