The federal government today agreed to key points in terms of the control distribution of cannabis for adults for recreative use”, Health Minister Carl Lauterbach said during a news conference on 26 October.
The supply and use of cannabis is expected to be allowed via issued and controlled licenses from the state”, Lauterbach said.
Under this proposal, persons over 18 will be allowed to possess “20 to 30 grams” dried cannabis, which should be sold at authorized stores and pharmacys.
Germany will also allow cannabis production, but businesses must get permission for that, while citizens will be allowed to grow three cannabis plants for personal use.
Under the proposal, no advertising for cannabis will be allowed, while packing cannabis products should be “neutral”.
Lauterbach did not show the exact date when this draft proposal will be transformed into law, but praised that legislation could enter into force in 2024.
Last year, Malta became the first country in Europe to officially legalize cannabis and its cultivation for personal use, even though some other countries have liberal laws on the matter. / REL/
