In these fair voting elections, there are about 340 thousand electors, where 100 electoral lists for 481 advisers in these municipalities compete.
The race will take place amid two political groups that have dominated Montenegro for years.
On one side are the pro-Montenegrin parties led by the current president's Democratic Party of Socialists, Milo Djukanovic, who over 30 years held power in Montenegro and on the other are the parties that won the 2020 elections, known as the pro-Serbian and pro-rus grouping.
As the first grouping in these local elections comes together in coalitions, the second grouping primarily competes, divided into some political forces.
The elections are held at the peak of the political crisis in the country, when the outgoing government Dritan Abazovic lost confidence and the parliamentary majority failed to form a new government.
Meanwhile, late Friday, the Montenegrin Parliament fired Defence Minister Rasko Konjevic and Foreign Affairs Minister Ranko Krivokapic with the votes of 41 deputies of majority parties and coalitions formed after the August 2020 elections.
The dismissal of foreign affairs and defence ministers has been initiated by Prime Minister Abazovic, saying that “ministers should not represent President Djukanovic's political party, but government positions. ”
At the same time, in the absence of deputies from Djukanovic's Democratic Party of Socialists, who boycotted the session, parliament did not elect four Constitutional Court judges because a majority of 54 votes were required.
Out of 14 municipalities, appearing in the elections Sunday, nine were governed by Djukanovic's Democratic Socialist Party with partners in the coalition.
But after the 2020 elections, in which it lost power at the state level, the party also lost in several municipalities, such as Niksic, Cetina and Mojkovac. /voa
